📚 from the books :: the girls 📚
The Girls was disturbing and scary and heartbreaking. The main character Evie is so young and impressionable. I felt all she wanted was to be loved and accepted, and she'd compromise everything to obtain it. Although the book was fixated on the girls Evie encountered within a cult, the undercurrent of the whole novel revolved around how men treat girls and how it can impact them psychologically and emotionally.
That was part of being a girl - you were resigned to whatever feedback you'd get. If you got mad, you were crazy, and if you didn't react, you were a b*tch. The only thing you could do was smile from the corner they'd backed you into. Implicate yourself in the joke even if the joke was always on you.
Why You Should Read It:
Somewhere between a bit of a thriller and a coming of age story, this book will give you a look into the mind and emotions of an adolescent girl who falls in with the wrong people.
